Diana’s Fanfiction
I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was lost in my thoughts, when he appeared. The boy who lived; Harry Potter!
I haven’t ever talked to him before. Of course, I knew about Harry. Who didn’t? He is famous after all. I just never had the courage to talk to him because well I’m a nobody. Now he wanted to talk to me. It was unbelievable.
Harry smiled at me, and said “…”
“Diana,” her mom said as she opened the door to her room.
“Mom,” Diana said, “I told you to knock.” Her mom sighed. She had been crying again. This never made sense. Why was her mom so emotional? She wasn’t the one trapped.
“I know I agreed to knock, but I haven’t heard from you in a while.”
“I’m writing,” Diana replied.
“That’s wonderful dear. I’ll leave you then.”
“When can I see Dad again?” Diana asked before realizing what she was doing. The room froze in anticipation. The entire universe waited to hear her mom response. Diana felt her mom’s eyes on her wheelchair. She didn’t look for long, but Diana noticed. Diana always noticed.
“Sweetie… I’m sorry, but I just don’t know.”
“Ok,” Diana said softly. Her mom left in complete silence. Diana turned back to her computer.
Harry smiled at me, and said “Hi Diana.”
“Hi,” I squeaked. Then I blushed, and to my surprise Harry blushed as well.
I laughed nervously. “What do you have to be embarrassed about? It isn’t like I’m famous or anything.”
Harry smiled again. “Sorry, I can’t help it. You’re super attractive.”
“Oh.”
“Umm,” Harry started, “Do you want to dance?”
“No, that’s stupid,” Diana muttered as she deleted the line. It didn’t feel right for Harry to ask about dancing. It was dreadfully normal.
“Do you want to see a spell? It’s pretty cool.”
“Yeah, why not?” I followed Harry to a field outside the Forbidden Forest. Once we arrived, Harry took my hand. I tried not to smile. I don’t think I succeeded.
Harry took a deep breath, and yelled-
What was the name of that spell? Diana looked at her collection of Harry Potter books. The shelf was just out of reach. Later, she would ask her mom to bring them down. Harry Potter was a modern classic. Classics were meant to be read; not to collect dust.
Diana went back to her story. She would add the name of the spell later. There were more important things to write about.
Immediately a white stag burst from Harry’s wand like an angel gliding through the air. I gasped. It was beautiful. “So,” Harry asked me, “What do you think?”
I grinned. He actually sounded nervous. “It’s the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”
Harry beamed with pride. “You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” My face was becoming a permanent shade of red.
“Do you want to try?” he asked.
I frowned, “I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“It was my dad,” I said quietly, “He’s the greatest, but he has a bit of a temper. It wasn’t his fault! I failed my test, and my dad was upset. He… he broke my wand.”
Diana blinked for a second before continuing.
Harry took my hand. “Hey, don’t worry about it. We can get you new one tomorrow.”
“Really?” I whispered.
“Yeah,” Harry said smiling, “Really.” His smile was contagious. Tomorrow couldn’t come soon enough.
“I wish we could go tonight, but everything is close.” Harry complained.
I looked around. I hadn’t noticed how late it was getting. The once blue sky was now buried in shadows. I couldn’t see anything, but the young wizard beside me. The boy who lived, and the child who survived.
“Diana?”
“Don’t you think they’re beautiful?” Harry asked me.
“What?” I hadn’t been paying attention.
“The stars. They always appear when the lights go out.”
He was right. The stars were magical. Light dancing in the ballroom of darkness.
“Diana!”
Diana’s hands dropped to her lap. Her mom was standing next to her.
“I knocked, but you didn’t answer.” Her mom said quickly. “I tried calling you, but…”
Diana stared blankly at her mom. She had been crying again. For some reason it didn’t bother her anymore.
“I worry about you Diana. I’m sorry, but I can’t help it.”
“It’s okay,” Diana said softly.
“Oh,” her mom said in surprise, “One of the Harry Potter movies is playing downstairs.”
“Which one?
Her mom frowned. “I can’t tell them apart. I thought you might want to watch it.”
“Mom?” Diana asked.
“Yes?”
“Can you watch it with me?”
For the first time in months, Diana’s mom smiled, “Of course sweetie, I’d love to.”
Diana smiled back, as the stars danced in the background.
